Bristol commenced for a city on the Gloucestershire aspect in the Avon, but since it grew it prolonged over the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "which the town of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be different through the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... Which it should be a county by by itself".[50]
